Survivor 49 Episode 6 Recap & Rankings: The Game Finally Heats Up Before the Merge

Image
Courtesy: CBS It took six episodes, but the entertainment and gameplay for Survivor 49 is finally starting to heat up — and it couldn’t have come at a better time, just one episode before the merge. Episode 6, titled “The Devil’s Shoes,” brought the first major shake-up of the season with a tribe swap and finally — finally — a satisfying blindside. Shannon’s elimination capped off an intense episode and served as a poetic ending to her long-running feud with Sage, setting the stage for what could be an explosive post-merge game. Old Yellow Tribe: The Calm Before the Storm We weren’t even a minute in before things got frustrating. Jawan opened the episode by saying, “We pulled off another blindside last night,” in a confessional, which is hilarious considering there hasn’t been a single real blindside all season — not even Jason was shocked by his own exit. Jawan’s confidence is starting to border on delusion, and as Savannah pointed out in confessional, the original red tribe members...

InsideUSA Review: A Wasteful, but weirdly promising experiment in competitive reality TV

Image
In the world of reality TV, there are some shows you hesitate to recommend to your friends. You know the type — the ones that sound so ridiculous in theory that you have to preface your pitch with “I swear, it’s actually good.” Big Brother is one of those for me. It’s campy, goofy and has enough fart sounds to turn casual fans away. Beneath all that, though, is social strategy, which is what keeps the superfans engaged despite the corny moments. Netflix’s InsideUSA , also, lands in that same “hard-to-recommend” territory — not because it’s completely bad, but because it hasn’t worked out its growing pains. Produced by The Sidemen — YouTube megastar KSI’s collective of British creators — InsideUSA is the latest entry in YouTuber-turned-TV experiments. It’s the group’s first American installment after two UK seasons (which I haven’t seen), and it’s clear that KSI and his crew have ambition. But it lacks the teeth that competitive reality TV staples have.  What makes shows l...

Survivor 49, Episode 5 Recap & Rankings: “I’m a Wolf, Baby” – The Most Boring Pre-Merge Ever?

Image
Courtesy CBS   At this point, Survivor 49 has turned into one long, predictable march to tribal with zero surprises and a cast that feels completely hollow. Episode 5, “I’m a Wolf, Baby,” continued the streak of being flat, boring, and lacking any real depth. The gameplay is one-dimensional and every vote-out feels telegraphed three scenes in advance. Honestly, this might be the most boring pre-merge of the new era — maybe ever. Yellow Tribe: Jason’s Dead in the Water The episode kicks off back at the yellow tribe, where Jason knows he’s dead in the water. He’s trying to pull something together to switch the numbers in his favor and decides to bond with Jawan — probably the worst ally he could possibly pick. Jawan’s also on the outs, but he doesn’t even realize it. His people will turn on him the second they need to, and he has no real say in anything. Even worse, Jawan doesn’t know he’s on the bottom, so there’s no real reason he’d lean Jason’s way. If he did, it would mean targ...
